Welcome to my web site

I'm writing this web site to help people entering the fascinating hobby of amateur radio. I know there are heaps of books available and there's a poultice of information on the Internet. I just want to give you some practical advice in non-technical terms.
I'll try to answer some of the questions I had and help you avoid some of the pitfalls I fell into.
Best of all, my advice is free and unbiased.
I have no connection with any radio or equipment manufacturer.
I've only had my Standard Licence three weeks and I've already had contacts with:
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • Indonesia
  • French Polynesia
  • Puerto Rico
  • Greece
  • Spain
  • Great Britain
  • Ireland
They've all given me good signal reports so I must be doing something right with my very basic setup. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on the latest top-of-the-range transceiver or have a huge tower with a seven element beam antenna.
I have an entry level radio and a piece of copper wire strung up to a tree at the end of the garden.
June 2016 - six months later and I've now had contacts in 43 countries. If you don't believe me check out the VK3PAT page on HRDLOG.
If you want to know more - read on.
