Going Portable
VK3PAT operating WWFF from Wonnangatta Valley
|
Portable operation is one of the aspects of Amateur Radio that I like most. The picture on the left shows me operating a World Wide Flora & Fauna activation from Wonnangatta Valley in the Alpine National Park. Think about it: no mains power, no mobile coverage so no internet connection to run your log or provide DX cluster information. You're on your own. This location is over 70Kms from the nearest town so there's absolutely no QRM. The I first turned the radio on I thought I'd forgotten to connect the antenna. For this operation we slung a 20m/40m linked dipole antenna between two big gum trees ad we were running on a 42 amp hour AGM battery. The Yaesu FT-450D transceiver seems very happy operating on 12.5VDC. We made 27 contacts, mostly VK but we also worked New Zealand and Fiji - all on 50 watts TX power.
